HUUM heaters are made in Tartu, Estonia, in small numbers and largely by hand. The steel arcs on the Drop and the Hive are cut and bent one at a time. The Cliff is formed from the offcuts of another heater in the range, so nothing is wasted. It is the same thinking we bring to timber, applied to fire. We have specified HUUM in Heritage saunas from the start.
Heritage Saunas is now the official New Zealand distributor for the range. The heaters are held here and warranted here, and we sell them to anyone building a sauna in this country, whether or not we're the ones building it.
HUUM's founder, Siim Nellis, is the third generation of an Estonian family of sauna stove builders (his grandfather Paul was a stove-setter). In 2011 he took the idea for a new heater to the Estonian Academy of Arts. A student's design became the Drop, which went into production in 2013 and won a Red Dot Product Design Award in 2015.
Every HUUM heater since has started from the old Estonian smoke sauna. The steel is kept to a minimum and the stone mass is large, up to 250kg in the Hive, so most of the heat comes off rounded olivine diabase stones and the steam stays soft for longer.
HUUM builds its own controller as well. Siim found the sauna controllers on the market still relied on an ethernet cable and a dated web page, so the team spent five years developing UKU in house. The wi-fi version runs from an app and tells you when the room has reached temperature.
UKU WiFi starts the heater from your phone, so the room is up to temperature by the time you’ve walked down the garden. UKU Local is a hardwired panel for saunas where wi-fi isn’t wanted.

Electric heaters must be wired and commissioned by a registered electrician, who fits the UKU control panel at the same time.
Electric is the simpler choice where the site has power, and the UKU controller lets you heat the room from your phone. The wood-fired Hive Wood and Hive Flow suit off-grid sites and anyone who wants the fire itself.
It comes down to the volume of the room and what it's built from, since glass and stone walls take more heat than timber. Every model in the shop lists its power rating and the room size it suits. If you're between two sizes, send us the room's dimensions and we'll advise.
